What is the 11 Plus?

The 11 Plus (also called the 11+ or Eleven Plus) is an exam taken by some pupils, usually early on in their last year of primary school. The exam is used by schools in certain areas of the UK as a means of selecting for grammar schools.

Although the 11 Plus exam varies from county to county, each exam usually tests for Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Typically, students are expected to sit three papers:

- A multiple choice reasoning paper

- A multiple choice literacy and numeracy paper

- A written exercise

The two multiple choice papers are marked electronically by an automated marking machine. However, the written exercise isn’t normally marked and is typically only looked at in cases of appeal.

Does my child need a tutor?

Grammar schools (and many selective independents) select their pupils on the strength of their performance in the 11 Plus examination. This exam tests applicants on English and maths, verbal reasoning (VR) and non-verbal reasoning (NVR), something your child may need help with.

Verbal and non-verbal reasoning tests are designed to assess aptitude rather than knowledge, while maths and English build on what's already been learnt at school.

There is massive competition for places, which is why so many people use 11 Plus tutors for preparation and exam help.

Tutoring for the 11 Plus focuses on verbal and non-verbal reasoning, and maths and English practice papers so pupils can see how questions are phrased and how they need to answer the questions.

When should my child begin tutoring?

Parents generally fall into one of 3 categories when embarking upon their 11 Plus tutoring journey:

  1. Early Adopters – those who begin tuition for their child in the early part of Year 4 or below.

  2. One Year Planners – those who begin their tuition at the start of Year 5, one year before the test

  3. Late Entrants – those who embark upon their journey a little later on with only a few months, weeks, or even days before the exam

No matter what group you fall in there is plenty that we can do to prepare your child for the 11+ test with tutoring, without the process becoming stressful for either of you.

Comments From Our Clients

My child developed so much with Young Learning. Matt was an amazing tutor, my daughter actually looked forward to going to the lessons each week! A big surprise! It was so nice to see her grow in confidence over the year and by the time the exam came around she was thoroughly prepared and ready. I am happy to say she not only passed but she passed with a score high enough to apply to the super selective grammar schools in Kent.
